About Me

My name is Kevin Bentley I’m a 42 year old proud husband and father of two children.  A girl & a boy and I create pastel portraits.

I have been drawing probably since I was 9 years old, drawing out of comic books and mad magazines. In elementary school I was always the one asked to draw this hero or that hero so after a while it got to were I could draw spiderman and the likes with out looking at the comic book.

As I got older in high school I would do portraits for schoolmates and my art teacher would scold me for just charging $25.00 for my work.  I guess she saw my potential even though I didn’t, to me I was just someone who could draw a little.  I never ever thought or even considered myself an artist, so I moved my price to $50.00 and Mrs. Grady (my art teacher) still got on me.

After finishing high school I worked various jobs and no matter where I worked once some found out I could draw and saw some of my work they would ask “Why are you working here instead of doing portraits?”  I would always think to myself I’m no artist in my quote un quote mind of what an artist was, plus it was easier said than done.

It wasn’t until I worked a job where I went to the well to do homes and saw some of the portraits in there homes. Then I realized I could do just as well or better in some cases.  I also thought maybe I am an artist . thus Bentley’s  Portraits is founded.

“Just wanted to say thx for the pic!!! We have it displayed in our living room for people to see when they first come in and the first thing they say is "Wow!!! who drew that picture of the kids? It looks just like them." Then they follow by saying something like i wish i could get my mom drawn or my kids drawn etc... Anyway its becomes a great conversation piece when we have company and I just love it. “Thx Leon .

Artist’s Statement

My portraits are done in soft pastel on velour, canton paper and pastel board

As an artist I have always been fascinated by the variety and challenge of drawing the human face.

I’ve always tried to capture the essence of the person while remaining true to a realism type of portrait.

As a child I would look min art books and be amazed at the old masters  and there attention to detail and lighting and shades so I to try to capture that same type of work through pastels.
